Where do you begin in order to save money and the environment, with plumbing related matters in your home?  Here are a few plumbing tips on how some suggestions can help lower monthly water bills.  It might be costly at first, but will save you money in the long run, not to mention, helping the environment at the same time! Here are a few environmentally friendly plumbing practices for your home:

Insulate Hot Water Pipes

Insulating hot water pipes eliminates significant amounts of heat loss as hot water travels from the water heater to the tap and often times sits and cools. This can also cut standby electricity or natural gas loss for your hot water tank heater, saving more on monthly utility bills.

Remove Plumbing From Exterior Walls Where Possible

Hire a licensed plumber and anywhere possible, remove your home’s plumbing through outside walls, but run them through conditioned spaces instead, and you’ll reduce the unnecessary heat loss.

New Hot Water Heaters

Replacing your older hot water tank with a new one could prove to reduce monthly bills and save money in the long run: newer units are much more efficient than its predecessors, thus saving you more in your utility bills. Tankless water heaters are also a great alternative. Tankless water heaters produce hot water on demand and eliminate the need for old conventional hot water tanks electricity or natural gas re-firing the tank to re-heat water. Many clients who have switched to tankless water heaters are very pleased with them.

Green Plumbing For A Better Environment

Here are quick tips on how to be green with water usage, starting with your home plumbing.

Low-Flow Showers and Faucets

Low flow shower heads can save you as much as 60% on hot water usage. That’s a lot of savings.  Many name brand companies (such as Moen) offer great low flow shower head products; visit your local home improvement centres (The Home Depot and Lowe's) for selections and possible promotions and discounts.

Low-Flush Toilets

A typical home uses 100 litres of water per person per day, just for flushing toilets. That gives flushing the toilet the single biggest water draw in your home. A low-flush toilet uses only between two to five times less per flush, making it very water friendly. Many new low flow toilets have 2 flushing asking; one that flushes a small amount of water for smaller business and a second longer flush that flushes more water for larger business.

Faucet Flow Aerators

These are easy-to-install systems and they just screw on the ends of your tap. When used, it reduces the flow of water and it can save you as much as 40% on water usage in high areas.

Energy-Efficient Appliances

Energy-efficient dishwashers and clothes washers has the potential to reduce your water bill by as much as 50%! That’s huge savings! Another great way to save on hot water is to wash clothes in cold water only. Washing clothes in only cold water eliminates the need for the washer to use hot water. Many detergent brands now offer cold water solutions.
